Part 2 – Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Windows

Can You Read Them?

In part one of this two-part post, we discussed signs that your windows need to be replaced based on performance and convenience. In today’s segment, we will talk about concerns related to safety and appearance. If you would like to go back and read part 1 of this series, click here.

Safety

Weather

Unsecured windows leave your home vulnerable in severe weather events. Not only can rain leak into your home and cause water damage and growth of mold and mildew, but weak latches and brittle glass are more likely to be blown in by high winds or broken by debris. This puts you at risk not just of damage to your windows, but to the interior of your home as well.

Home Invasion

Weather isn’t the only potential hazard resulting from deteriorating windows. If a window has a damaged or broken lock, it compromises the safety of your home. Burglars often gain access to houses through secondary entrances, like windows. Faulty locks and brittle glass make a target that much more appealing – don’t make it easy for them! High quality windows are an essential part of home security, and peace of mind.

Appearance

If you’re planning on selling your home in the near future, you’re renovating an historic house, or you simply want to upgrade your look, replacing the windows is a great place to start. Windows are the focal point of any house’s curb appeal, and new, stylish windows will increase your home’s value significantly.

Faded Interior

If your carpet, furniture, or wallpaper has faded, or you simply want to prevent it fading in the future, you’ll want to upgrade to Low-Emissivity (Low-E) windows. There are all kinds of reasons why Low-E is the best option for any home, but protecting your home’s interior is too often overlooked. A Low-E coating will prevent UV rays from damaging any part of your home that receives direct sunlight. Click here for more information about energy-efficient windows.

Cracks, Chips, and Deterioration

Wear and tear on glass and window frames is not only unsightly, but is the start of a slippery slope to greater damage. Cracked frames and chipped glass make windows less energy-efficient, lead to leaks that cause frames to warp, and foster the growth of mold and mildew inside your home. As with many issues windows develop over time, repairs will address the symptom, but not the actual problem.

Outdated or Mismatched Style

Eventually, we all realize that certain features in our home just aren’t as fashionable as they once were. Or perhaps you just moved into an older home and its features don’t match the style of your furnishings – either way, one of the simplest ways to improve the overall look of your home (and increase its value!) is to have your windows replaced with a fresh, updated style.
